How many people use online dating services

By Garry

We suggest you take a look at what the online dating market is like today, as well as what the statistics look like right now

In ‘ 65, a small team from Harvard created the Match service, which in fact became the first dating site in history. It offered users to complete a small survey after paying $ 3, and based on the answers, it provided a list of the most compatible people.

At that time, due to the weak spread of the Internet, there was not much excitement around Match. The boom happened in the two thousandth. And by 2020, the financial volume of the global Internet dating market has increased to almost $ 12 billion.

Top Online Dating Players

As of 2020, there are about 8,000 online dating services in the world. This number is constantly growing every year. They can be divided into three broad categories::

  1. Based on personal compatibility.
  2. Based on the user’s location.
  3. Designed for a special audience: older people, non-traditional sexual orientation, and others.

Due to the oversupply of services, niche resources and mobile programs are becoming the most popular. For example, to search for a serious relationship: eDarling, Teamo, and eHarmony.

Some services go in a completely non-standard way. For example, a few years ago, the Eve app was launched in the United States. The developers position it as a way to find serious acquaintances and protect girls from harassment. This is implemented quite simply — the more female accounts are “approved” by male users, the faster their own rating decreases. That is, a man takes the issue of choosing a partner more seriously.

SEMrush analytical service has compiled a list of the most popular online dating services based on the number of search queries.:

  1. Badoo
  2. Tinder
  3. Grindr
  4. Meetic
  5. Meetme
  6. Plenty of fish
  7. Okcupid
  8. Zoosk
  9. Parship

Please note: this rating may not convey an accurate picture, as the number of queries in search engines and the number of actual users of the site/app may differ significantly. Nevertheless, the popularity of Badoo, Tinder and Grindr cannot be denied.

Some statistics

According to various statistics (with a small margin of error), about a third of all Internet users have used dating resources at least once. About one and a half million people “sit” on such resources for 4 hours a day or more.

The sex ratio on the sites is on average 50: 50. However, the performance of different ad platforms may differ significantly. Many resources are dominated by a male audience.

Interesting fact: British psychologist Geoffrey Gavin conducted a study in which young people aged 19-26 years old who registered on dating sites took part. As a result, 72% of users continued to communicate offline.

Many experts say that sites like Match and Tinder are extremely positive for modern society. They strengthen social ties and enhance the diversity of society as a whole. Such resources allow people from different social circles to communicate. And, more importantly, from different geographical locations. So, in America, thanks to dating services, the number of interracial marriages increased by 50% by 2017.

According to Match representatives, every third relationship and every fifth marriage today begins with online dating. And this is very significant, because it was almost impossible to imagine such a thing twenty years ago.

There are significant differences in the popularity of dating services in different countries. The Sensor Tower analytical resource has provided its list of the most popular dating applications by country:

  • USA — Tinder, POF, Bumble, Zoosk, Match;
  • China-Tantan, Momo, Zhenai, Yanfenba, Blued;
  • India — Tinder, Mico, Jaumo, Shaadi, Brahat;
  • Mexico — Tinder, Hitwe, Badoo, Jaumo, POF;
  • Russia — Frim, Mamba, Badoo, Topface, LovePlanet.

An interesting study was conducted in 2017 by the Russian Kaspersky Lab together with B2B International. Almost 6,500 users from thirty countries were surveyed. Based on the data obtained, the researchers managed to create a typical portrait of a person who uses an online dating site. Its main characteristics are:

  • male 33-34 years old;
  • works full-time;
  • probably, this is an ordinary manager or a niche employee — a teacher, a researcher, an engineer.

Researchers also point out that about 10-11% of users are businessmen or heads of firms.

Why people are interested in online dating

Kaspersky Lab and B2B International, mentioned above, have established that finding a person for a serious relationship is far from the first thing that people register for on dating platforms. Goal statistics show the following:

  • for entertainment — 48%;
  • to find new friends-41%;
  • just to have a good time — 24%;
  • to find a match-19%;
  • for sex-13%;
  • to get married and start a family — 11%.

About 5% of respondents said that they registered on dating sites to check if their partner was cheating on them. 4% were undecided, and 12% chose not to answer the question at all.

The same survey found that more than 50% of people write or tell lies about themselves. Of this number, 67% are men who are already married.

Match Group reports that right now there are at least 600 million singles in the world who have free access to the Network. But at the same time, 400 million of them have never used dating sites or apps. Analysts predict that this number will constantly decrease.

Who most often uses dating services

According to statistics, the main group of users of such resources is millennials. That is, people born between 1881 and 1996. They were the first generation most involved in digital technologies.

Kaspersky Lab reports that more than 40% of people aged 25-34 use online dating services. Tinder provides similar statistics, in which 85% of the service’s users are 18-24-year-olds. At the same time, many analytical resources report relatively rapid growth in the adult and even elderly audience.

Traffic data by country also looks interesting:

  • United States of America-62.9%
  • United Kingdom — 7.34%
  • Australia — 4.5%
  • Canada — 2.3%
  • Netherlands — 2%
  • France — 1.73
  • Germany — 1.64%
  • India — 1.63%
  • Brazil — 1.41%
  • Switzerland — 1.11%
  • Other countries — 13.5%

The popularity of dating sites in the United States is due to two factors. First, it is a large area of the United States. Users are often interested in finding a partner from another city or state. Secondly, the American mentality plays a role. They do not welcome casual dating on the street and increasingly prefer to meet online.
